Dialysis in a Center

For some people, the best treatment option is to receive hemodialysis in one of our centers.

Why Consider In-Center Hemodialysis?

✓ For many patients, receiving treatment at a dialysis center is simpler and less demanding than managing dialysis at home.

✓ Skilled nurses and dialysis technicians are present during every session to ensure safety and comfort.

✓ With our conveniently located center, it’s easier to schedule in-center dialysis around your work, school, or other daily commitments. We’re open throughout the year, closing only on Christmas Day.

Not Sure Which Type of Dialysis Is Right for You?

If you’re weighing your options between home dialysis and in-center treatment, you’re welcome to attend our free educational class or have a conversation with our skilled professionals to make an informed decision.

Preparing for In-Center Dialysis

Before starting dialysis treatments at a center, you’ll need to:

  • Have a vascular access placed. The most commonly recommended access type is a fistula, created through a minor outpatient procedure. A surgeon joins an artery and a vein in the arm, and over the course of 6 to 8 weeks, the access site strengthens and matures until it's ready for dialysis treatments.

  • Arrange for transportation. If you were driving before starting dialysis, you can usually continue to do so. However, during your first few sessions, it’s a good idea to have someone drive you, as it’s common to feel a bit tired or lightheaded afterward. For your convenience, we also offer free transportation to and from the center—just let us know if you’d like to arrange a ride.

What Happens During Treatment?

  • Arrive early. For your first session, come in ahead of time to review and sign paperwork and discuss any questions you may have.

  • Getting started. You’ll settle into a comfortable chair while a nurse or technician connects you to the dialysis machine, which cleans your blood through a filter called a dialyzer.

  • Treatment duration. Each session typically lasts about four hours as the machine removes toxins and excess fluid from your body.

  • Stay comfortable. During treatment, you can relax however you’d like—sleep, read, use a laptop, watch TV, or chat. Each center provides free Wi-Fi and televisions for your convenience.

  • Ongoing care. A team including your nurse care manager, dietitian, and social worker is always available to offer guidance, answer questions, and support you throughout your treatment journey.

Your in-center dialysis routine

  • Three days a week

Patients typically dialyze three times a week. Depending on availability, you may choose either a Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule or a Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday.

  • Morning, Midday, or Evening Sessions

We offer three shift options so you can pick the time of day that suits your routine best. Once a time slot is selected, you’ll follow the same schedule for each treatment day.

  • Around four hours per treatment

Each dialysis session lasts around four hours, though the exact time can vary based on your individual treatment needs. We kindly ask patients to arrive about 30 minutes early to prepare for treatment.

We understand life is busy—whether it’s work, school, or family responsibilities. Our team will do their best to help you find a treatment time that works with your schedule.
